Weekly Notes from the Principal's Desk. . .

January 20, 2004

  • Catholic Schools Week is next week. The theme this year is “Catholic Schools-A Faith-Filled Future.” You received a schedule of events in last week's Monday Envelope. I would like to highlight items on the schedule and add a few new ones.
    • Many of our students will be involved in the Sunday Masses this week as musicians, lectors, altar servers, gift bearers, etc. If your child has been given such a responsibility, please make sure he/she is at Mass 15 minutes early. Show your child where you are sitting (preferably near the front on the inside aisle). Then accompany your child to the sacristy where there will be a teacher to help oversee your child's involvement.
    • Our school week will begin with a paraliturgy in the church on Monday at 8:00 AM. Since many parents will be dropping off children at 7:30 AM for school, we would like to invite you to a Principal's Tea in the Parish Center. Come and enjoy coffee, tea and treats while you wait for the paraliturgy to start.
    • Please remember to invite friends and family to the Open House at 6:30 PM on Thursday. This is an opportunity to let the public experience what Saint Ann School has to offer.
    • Because we hope to welcome a large crowd, we ask you to please contribute cookies. (What's an Open House without treats?) These can be sent with your child on Thursday or dropped off at the office during the day.
    • Remember--the family art project is due on Friday, January 23. These projects will be on display during Catholic Schools Week. The essay/poetry contest entries are also due on Friday, January 23.

  • Mrs. Darlene Hunsinger, the Parent Participation Coordinator, has asked that you keep in mind the following as you record parent hours:
    1. Be specific regarding what the activity is;
    2. Rather than using two lines, you should combine hours of family members working on the same activity (i.e.-“2 people working in Meditation Garden, 2 hrs. each, 4 hrs. total);
    3. Hours should be recorded in ½ or 1 hr. increments only;
    4. Record the date (approximate is okay);
    5. Don't abbreviate-what's clear to you may not be clear to someone else.

  • The results are in (for the most part)--the Holiday Arts and Crafts Show earned a profit for our school of over $9,800!! Congratulations to all who made this such a success-vendors, craft makers, students, volunteers, and especially Kathy Schumacher and Gloria Avalos. There are still a few pies for sale for $5 each, but they're going fast.

  • Our best wishes and prayers go with Maggie Marvin as she competes as our school's representative at the regional spelling bee in Bakersfield on Wednesday. She will be accompanied by Miss Rossi and alternate Patrick Lilly.

  • Second Grade will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation this Friday. Please keep them in your prayers.

  • The Saint Ann School Car Raffle is Saturday, January 31 (less than two weeks away!). Please support this fundraiser by buying - or going in on - a ticket. Your odds of winning a prize are certainly much better than the California lottery; only 200 tickets will be sold.

  • The end of the second quarter was last Friday. Report cards will come out in next week's Monday Envelope. Please make an appointment with your child's teacher if you have any questions.

  • We are searching for a chairperson for another successful fundraiser, Masterpiece Cookie Dough sales. If you would like to help-and earn parent hours, of course-contact the school office or Vic Walkling, PTG President.

  • Middle School Basketball practices start this week. Our first game will be next Monday vs. Charter at the Cerro Coso gym. The girls will play at 3:30 PM; the boys will play at 4:30 PM. Come cheer!
